Running on empty.

Normally at this time of year, there would still be weeks worth of water stored behind the weir, and that water would be slowly released (by gravity) to keep a steady flow in the river. This year, due mostly to a very dry spring with no snow pack, that water 'bank' is empty. Electric pumps are now being used to move water over the lip of the lake into the river to sustain flows.

And here is the good news!

"This project is a great example of what can be achieved when all levels of government come together with local citizens, and commit to being resilient in the face of climate change", said Tom Rutherford, Executive Director of the Cowichan Watershed Board. "There is no doubt that the legendary salmon and trout runs that have helped build local cultures and communities in the Cowichan Valley are at risk. The science-based, collaborative approach demonstrated by this initiative provides us all with hope for a sustainable water future for the Cowichan Valley and beyond."

The Cowichan Watershed Board acknowledges the collaborative work of many people to get to this next phase in a solution to low flows in the Cowichan, but particularly our local elected representatives, MLA Sonia Furstenau and MP Alistair Bruce MacGregor for working with co-chairs Chief William Seymour and Chair Ian Morrison to secure this critical support from senior governments. Thanks also to all the watershed stewards, scientists and knowledge keepers who have worked for decades towards a solution.

The Cowichan Valley Regional District has received major grant funding from the BC Salmon Restoration and Innovation Fund (BCSRIF) to preserve water supply for the Cowichan River! The project is being advanced in partnership with Cowichan Tribes, Paper Excellence and Cowichan Watershed Board, and will support detailed engineering designs for a new weir on Lake Cowichan.
